LEGO Ideas La Catrina: A Cultural Icon Gets the Brick Treatment

LEGO Ideas has revealed a new set, La Catrina, and it’s more than just plastic bricks. It’s a piece of culture, a nod to Mexican heritage, and a story told in miniature. For many of us, La Catrina is a familiar sight, especially around Día de Muertos, but her origins and significance run deeper than many realise. This new set, born from the LEGO Ideas platform where fan designs can become official products, aims to bring that story to life.

The builder behind this creation is Dulce Gomez, a Mexican designer who poured her personal connection to the iconic figure into the submission. She explains that La Catrina, often depicted as an elegantly dressed skeleton, is a symbol of Mexican identity and a commentary on social class from early 20th-century Mexico. It’s a reminder that death is a natural part of life, and that even in mortality, there’s room for art and satire. Gomez's passion for the project shines through, highlighting how LEGO can be a powerful medium for cultural expression and education.

While we don’t have specific set numbers or pricing details for India yet, the anticipation for this set is already building. The LEGO Ideas line often produces unique and display-worthy models, and La Catrina promises to be no exception. It’s a chance for fans to own a piece of art that represents a significant cultural symbol, crafted with the familiar precision and charm of LEGO. We’re expecting this to be a conversation starter on any display shelf.

No Indian store prices are available yet for the LEGO Ideas La Catrina set. Given the nature of LEGO Ideas releases, expect this to be a sought-after item. If this were officially sold in India, it would cost roughly the same as 18 months of Netflix — assuming LEGO India's usual enthusiasm for your wallet. MyBrickHouse and Toycra will likely stock it 4–6 weeks after global launch. Code ABHINAV12 takes 12% off full-price sets at Toycra, minimum order ₹500. Keep an eye on both for when it drops.

The fact that this set comes from a place of genuine cultural appreciation, championed by a fan like Dulce Gomez, makes it particularly special. It moves beyond just being a toy; it becomes a bridge between different cultures, fostering understanding and appreciation through the universal language of LEGO. This is a set that celebrates heritage, art, and the creative spirit. We’ll be watching closely for release dates and pricing in India.

On that bombshell, bubyee.
